Day of the Dead is full of imagery that if you aren't aware of what the holiday is about, might seem a bit morbid or strange.
Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) mixes Catholic and Mexican tradition and celebrates loved ones who have passed away. It is believed that on November 1st and November 2nd, the veil between the living and the dead is at its most transparent. It is at this time that the souls of the dead can return to their loved ones. Alters for this event encourage the souls to visit, and stay for a while to listen to those they have left behind remember them with joy. Many families prepare food and drink that their loved ones enjoyed while living. It is thought that the aroma of the food will also attract the spirits. A candle is lit for each soul that is being remembered, and an extra one is lit for the "forgotten souls". You can read more about the Day of the Dead HERE.
